Make use of this simple buttercream icing recipe to brighten your birthday cakes, cupcakes and sandwich biscuits. Try adding just a little food colouring gel for any a little colour.

Ingredients

  • 140g/5oz butter, softened
  • 280g/10oz icing sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons of milk
  • teaspoon vanilla flavoring
  • couple of drops food colouring
  • 1 large orange, zest and a pair of tablespoons of juice
  • 25g cacao powder
  • 75g milk or chocolates, melted

Method

Beat the butter inside a large bowl until soft. Add 1 / 2 of the icing sugar and beat until smooth.

Add some remaining icing sugar and something tablespoon from the milk and vanilla flavoring and beat the mix until creamy and smooth. Beat within the remaining milk, if required, to release the mix.

Stir within the food colouring, if using, until well combined.

For that orange buttercream variation, omit the milk and vanilla in the fundamental recipe. Stir within the zest and juice until completely combined.

For that chocolate variation, omit the milk in the fundamental recipe. Cream the butter and sugar, as above, also adding the cacao powder. Permit the melted chocolate to awesome for ten minutes before contributing to the whipped butter and sugar. Beat until well combined.

Steps to make buttercream icing without any protuberances: In case your icing sugar is old and pebbly, sieve the icing sugar to get rid of any clumps because these won’t dissolve within the butter icing.
